A typical Chamorro settlement located in
a coastal area. This village sustained itself
primarily from the resources of the sea. Its choice
location gave it the right to control access to
fishing in its immediate area. Similarly, those who
owned choice agricultural locations inland
perennially had better harvests.
Houses with taller foundations than others indicate
higher status of their occupants. Since ownership
of property is passed from generation to
generation, higher status lineage is preserve for
those in the high houses.
